Armed Services Memorial
In July of 2012, the Stafford County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution to establish a commission to create an armed services memorial in Stafford County that would honor the loss of Stafford's brave sons and daughters and their families; provide a place for families and citizens to honor the fallen; and serve as a visible reminder to the public of all the men and women who gave the last full measure of devotion to their country. Members of the Armed Services Memorial Commission were Supervisor Gary Snellings, Lt. Gen. Ron Christmas, USMC (Ret.), and Supervisor Mark Dudenhefer.
The commission worked with Stafford County Public Schools to hold a design competition. Students from each of Stafford's five high schools were invited to submit drawings of their vision of a memorial. The winning design was by Aaron Brown of North Stafford High School, who won a $1,500 scholarship. All of the top five designs were used by an architect to prepare the final design.
Next, the Board of Supervisors appointed a group of citizen volunteers to a working group to organize fundraising for the $835,000 memorial, located on the Stafford Government Campus. The group included Col. Jim Brown, Daniel Chichester, John Cox, Elizabeth Davis, Sue Henderson, Sheriff Charlie Jett, Mark Osborn, Billy Shelton, Ed Wallace and Frank White. One year and two months after the fundraising kick-off breakfast, the County held the dedication for the memorial on a beautiful July day. The group collaborated with businesses, individual donors and community organizations to raise the money in just about a year, several years less than initially was planned. Much thanks go to the community for its great support for this worthwhile effort.
